Down memory lane at the Cake and Bake Show
It was a #caketastic day out last week with a trip to the Cake and Bake Show in Manchester! It was trip down memory lane for me, since Manchester was where I spent many summer holidays with my Great Aunt and Uncle. Grandma’s sister, Emma* lived there after spending her days ‘in service’ near Withington. We always travelled from Yorkshire by train to Manchester Central, and now this former railway station terminus has been converted to a major exhibition hall.
*You can find some of Aunty Emma’s recipes in Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking book – her Rock Buns were the best I’ve ever tasted!
We were handed the useful Cake and Bake bag and set off into the exhibition with the show programme plan to make sure we didn’t miss anything!
What a wealth of wedding cakes, cup cakes, baking ingredients – the Dr Oetker stand was a firm favourite - and baking and cake decorating equipment so everything you might need to make that glorious creation. We bought ourselves some bargain biscuit cutters.
Celebrity baker spotting in the demo areas
It was very busy - so it was good to find a quieter spot for a lunchtime break and try a piece of Bradleys Bakery wonderful Cheese and Onion Pie.
My highlight was to meet @GrandmaAbson Twitter follower, @ChrisPBlackburn, Yorkshire Pudding King from Halifax. Chris was a contestant on ITV’s Food Glorious Food and Yorkshire Pudding Champion 2011 and 2012, so has a fantastic pedigree where all things Yorkshire are concerned. We had a great #baking #chat and agreed to a Blog post swap later in the year.
